James Family Photo Journal for 2002

Dear friends and family:

We began 2002 in Seattle, with Rich, Debbie and Antonia – who was preparing to return to the UK after 6 months working in the U.S.  Antonia had decided that she wanted to return to academia, and would apply to Oxford and Cambridge to do a Ph.D. in Chemistry.

Once again, with Antonia’s ambitious plans, we (actually Jan!) said “Oh yes?” – but, of course, once again she delivered!  Antonia was offered positions at both universities, and accepted a place (with a Scholarship) at Jesus College, Cambridge.  She will work on “Non-linear optical effects at interfaces” – or something like that, in the University Department of Physical Chemistry.  Antonia didn’t start at Cambridge until October.  In the meantime she worked in Watford, for General Motors (GMAC), in their data management division.

In April, Tony and I were in Seattle again, for a visit to the harbor-side workshop (and home) of glass artist Dale Chihuly.  A unique experience to see firsthand how Chihuly’s huge glass sculptures are created!

In May, Tony had a meeting in Vancouver, B.C., so I decided to tag along – and enjoy a week of spring in Canada.  The weather was lovely, and I had great fun walking the city and visiting Chinatown, the aquarium, etc.

In June, Tony’s longtime UK colleague, Alan Birchall, arrived for a 5-week working visit.  During this time, Alan and Tony were on the Faculty of the Health Physics Summer School, for a week at the University of Florida, Gainesville.  Alan also went for a week of brainstorming – with the “boffins” at Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico.

In August, Tony and I decided that it had been way too long since we saw our granddaughter, Mia – so we had a long weekend in Fort Collins, Colorado, where Gareth now lives and works.  We were also eager to meet Joyce, Gareth’s fiancé, for the first time, with her two sons, Dylan (6) and Ethan (3).  We are all looking forward to Gareth and Joyce’s wedding in the summer of 2003.

In September, Tony had another meeting – at New College, Oxford, UK (“new” in 1379 that is!).  He was there for 6 days, came home for a week – and then we both went back to the UK for two weeks of tourism!  It was wonderful to see the sights of London again – some for the first time.  Antonia had organized an intensive program of “activities” for us, including Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre, the London Eye, a South African musical, etc.  We then helped her move from Watford to Cambridge – and had a week of “sight-seeing” Cambridge and vicinity

On our return home, we had a visit from Tony’s cousin Lindsay’s daughter, Jane, and her boyfriend, Owen.  Jane and Owen had both just graduated from Art College in South Wales, and came for a month’s relaxation and vacation.  They “relaxed” by driving to-and-from Seattle, Vancouver, B.C., and San Francisco! – also taking in some of our “local” sights.  They were great fun, and refreshing (for us “oldies”) to have around – and we really enjoyed their visit!

In early November, Tony left for a business trip to Korea and Japan, where he met up with Alan Birchall, for a two-week business “promotional” tour – a “follow-up” from September’s meeting in Oxford.  They had a successful, and fun, trip, managing to meet up (in Taejon, Korea) with Jacqueline Thomson – Antonia’s best childhood friend!

In early December, Tony was traveling again, this time to Maryland and Virginia.  I went along at the start of his trip – for a weekend in Washington, D.C.  I had never been to DC before, so it was great to see all those famous buildings and wonderful museums.

Rich and Debbie continue to do well in their respective careers – and work on their lovely Lynnwood home.  In the autumn they gave us the wonderful news that they will be having a spring baby!  2003 is getting really exciting!

However, we also had a wonderful ending to 2002 – when we managed to get the whole gang together for Christmas!  Rich and Debbie drove over from Seattle, Gareth, Joyce, Mia and Ethan flew in from Colorado, and Antonia flew in from England!  This was a rare achievement – getting them all together.  The last time was Rich and Debbie’s wedding – over 2 years ago!

We put Antonia on her plane on New Year’s Eve – so her “UK” New Year happened somewhere over the Atlantic.  2003 promises to be a very special year.  We are expecting a new baby, a wedding, and who knows what else!  We hope that your year is just as full of love, hope – and good health!

With best wishes,

Jan & Tony
